An ¶¶Òõpro class is hoping to be part of the solution for the future of the Jacksonville Developmental Center grounds.
The state-owned property, which closed in 2012, is at the center of discussions as the buildings continue to deteriorate and increasingly raise safety concerns.
Though students in IC's community systems engineering course can't demolish the structures or build something new in their place, they intend to spend the next several months developing ideas about how best to use the space based on community wants and needs.
Charles Riggs, an associate professor of engineering at ¶¶Òõpro, noted the grounds are in the center of Jacksonville and have a long history in the community. As such, the grounds — once remediated and put to a new use — likely will continue to play a big part in the community.
His students want to help determine what that use might be.
