Jack Pickerill '24
Jack Pickerill ‘24 reflects on how his college experiences, from a supportive esports environment to a hands-on internship at the Illinois State Museum, significantly shaped his career trajectory.
Entering college during the COVID-19 pandemic, Pickerill found that the smaller class sizes and close-knit community at IC were instrumental in helping him build strong connections, particularly through the team. Pickerill’s participation in esports not only fueled his passion for gaming but also fostered teamwork and leadership skills that would later play a key role in his career.
As a communication and rhetorical studies major, Pickerill valued the practical, real-world experiences offered through IC's programs. He recalled courses that focused on public speaking, interviews, and rhetoric, which honed his ability to effectively communicate and build rapport in professional settings. These skills proved invaluable during his internship at the Illinois State Museum, where he worked in various departments, including marketing, public relations, and event coordination.
During his time at the Illinois State Museum, Pickerill had the opportunity to collaborate with multiple teams, gaining insight into the inner workings of a public institution and the many career paths within the field. "The internship helped me build a versatile skill set," he shared, "and allowed me to dip my toes into many different areas, from marketing to PR to event planning."
He added that these experiences not only broadened his understanding of what a career in communication could look like but also helped him develop a “tool belt” that’s been crucial in his current consulting work.
For Pickerill, his internship solidified the value of experiential learning. "Internships give you a chance to figure out what you do and don't like. They provide networking opportunities that can help launch your career."
