Alex Johnson '25
Alex Johnson ’25, a senior studying business and sports management, highlights the importance of internships in shaping her career.
A student-athlete, Johnson has been a member of the college’s volleyball team since her freshman year, but it’s her off-the-court experiences that have had the biggest impact on her future.
Johnson has completed two internships during her time at IC, which were generously funded by the John M. Williamson ’78 Experiential Learning Fund and the Meribeth Fyler Jones and Helen Fyler Experiential Learning Endowment Fund. This past summer, she served in a role with the Memorial Health Championship (Korn Ferry Tour), a Springfield-based golf tournament affiliated with the PGA. Her duties ranged from marketing and operations to hospitality management. This hands-on experience, she says, helped her make valuable connections within the sports industry, including with PGA executives and other sports management professionals.
Her first internship, secured through LinkedIn, involved working with a local baseball team, the Springfield Sliders. These opportunities allowed Johnson to explore different facets of the sports world, ultimately guiding her toward a career in sports marketing and athlete management.
For Johnson, internships have been essential not only for building a network but also for understanding what she values in a work environment. "My experience with internships has given me the room to grow,” Johnson notes, “Most importantly, I’ve learned what type of work environment I value.”
