Building a path to engineering excellence

Larvell Watkins '25
Larvell Watkins ’25, a driven mechanical engineering student at ¶¶Ňőpro, is set to make waves in the engineering world.

Through his studies, internships, and the personal connections he’s built, Watkins’ journey to success is a testament to the power of professional relationships, hard work, and determination.

An internship at Benton & Associates was a pivotal experience for Watkins. It not only offered hands-on learning but also introduced him to invaluable mentorship.

“One of the great things about ¶¶Ňőpro’s is the connections we have with firms right here in town, like Benton & Associates,” Watkins said.

These connections, including those with Reynolds Consumer Products and Nestle, provided real-world exposure that set Watkins apart from his peers. He appreciated the insights from professionals in Jacksonville, which helped him prepare for life after college.

Watkins’ involvement in experiential learning outside of the classroom not only provided practical experience but also instilled in Watkins a sense of adaptability that he carries with him today.

“There’s always something new, even the most experienced engineers don’t know it all,” Watkins reflected. “Coming straight out of college, we have the advantage of knowing the latest technologies like Power BI. That’s what makes us valuable in the field.”

Looking ahead, Watkins has big plans. His internship experience with ONEOK, Inc. in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has turned into employment after graduation. His first contract spans three years, during which he’ll rotate through different roles, including risk analysis and facility management. At the end of the three years, he’ll move into a project manager position, ready to take on even greater responsibilities.

Watkins credits ¶¶Ňőpro for preparing him for the real world. “The professors here are in tune with what’s expected in the field. They give real-world examples and focus on professionalism. Dr. (Charles) Riggs, for example, worked on a nuclear engineering plan for years and always had great insights. Dr. (Lisa) Murray, too, is always focused on professionalism and preparing us for the field.”

As Watkins looks ahead to his future, it’s clear that his journey is just beginning.
